One thing that was always an issue with the NWN2 interface to me, was it seemed to be designed by an ex-employee of Fisher Price toys. Everything seemed... 'large'. Ive tried a few times to work out a layout for a extremely minimalistic primary GUI, that still has a feel to it. but havent been able to get it right.
Part of the problem is getting everything you need in, and making it at least visible, yet not visible. I think ive finally come up with a layout I think might work, its small enough to sit nicely in a natural blindspot, but you can notice when something nasty happens out of the corner of your eye...

| Simple I know, but its a work in progress. |
The only drawback with this is... no character portraits, but are they really necessary when your character is there, larger than life in the middle of the screen?.. throw in the strange issue ive noticed with my copy of NWN2 in that custom portraits seem to degrade the games performance if you control any character that uses one (familiars are the worst), and i don't see that they would be missed (Although a nice big portrait in the character window makes up for it :P ).
It'll change for sure, and none of the artworks final yet, it needs tweeking for space etc, but im also incorporating the 'Rest', 'AI' and manual camera type buttons into the Partybar... which will free up space on my re-sizable (including completely hide at the users will) main Hotbar.
Back into Photoshop I go...

That's impressive. It actually looks like it's from another game.
ReplyDeletereally neat GUI - i like that. Portraits wouldn't be too hard to add (smaller than current ones) tho?
